A naturally occurring mutant mammalian gene that allows phenotypic detection of the tissue-cultured cells bearing it. Examples are the genes causing galactosemia and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency in man, and the genes producing certain cell surface antigens in the mouse.
