A group of American artists who in 1950 protested against the exhibition policy of the Metropolitan Museum, New York, demanding the formation of a department to show modern American art. A photograph (now much reproduced) of fifteen of the Irascibles appeared in Life magazine on 15 January 1951. Among them were many of the leading Abstract Expressionists, including de Kooning, Newman, Pollock, Rothko, and Still.
