(1761–1842), Dean of Westminster. Having entered Oriel College, Oxford, as a Bible clerk in 1779, he became Vicar of Croydon in 1793, and Dean of Westminster in 1816. He gave large sums to the University of Oxford for classical scholarships, and in his will he founded the chair of Exegesis of Holy Scripture (since 1947 confined to the NT) which goes by his name, and some exhibitions at Oriel College.
