(1771–1838), older brother of Washington Irving, helped him in planning Salmagundi, the History of New York, and the Tales of a Traveller. His own writing is unimportant, although he was for a time a political journalist and member of literary society, and wrote such works as Giovanni Sbogarro (1820), a historical romance set in Venice. He edited the New York Morning Chronicle and The Corrector, to which his brother contributed.
