In the Bible, a Hebrew patriarch, son of Abraham and Sarah and father of Jacob and Esau, whom Abraham was commanded by God to sacrifice. Because of his obedience to God, Isaac was spared; a ram caught in a thicket nearby was substituted for the boy.
