Catholicos or Patr. of the Armenian Church from c.389. A noted ascetic, he encouraged St Mesrob to invent an Armenian script and himself translated parts of the Bible. On his death, Armenian dependence on Caesarea for the consecration of its patriarchs ended. Feast days in the Armenian Church, 9 Sept. and 25 Nov.
