A wide variety of compounds containing an —N==C==S group, found especially in cruciferous vegetables; they inhibit enzymes of phase I metabolism and activate those of phase II (see metabolism, phase I; metabolism, phase II), so reducing the formation, and increasing the clearance, of potential carcinogens. They also inhibit the proliferation of tumour cells, by inducing apoptosis and arresting cell cycle progression.
