Afro-Brazilian dancer. He studied drama and dance in Brazil and performed there as a solo dancer, before being invited to New York by Ailey in 1983. Here he continued creating and performing solo works such as Phoenix (1985) and Delirium of a Childhood (mus. Mahler, 1989), in which the charismatic intensity, and sculptural power of his style brought him an international reputation. From the early 1990s he based his own group Compagnie Ismael Ivo in Stuttgart, presenting works like Othello (jointly chor. with Johann Kresnik, 1995). In 2001 he co-created an award-winning production of The Maids with Kofi Koko and also created and performed the duet Tristan and Isolde with M. Haydee in Hong Kong. He was appointed director of Venice Dance Festival in 2005.
