The common name for the family of ticks (Ixodidae) that carry the rickettsia causing rocky mountain spotted fever, scrub typhus, several other rickettsial diseases, and some varieties of hemorrhagic fever. The ticks live on grass before seeking a blood meal from wild ungulates, domesticated goats and sheep, or humans.
