Last of the traditional Egyptian Muslim historiographers. Witnessed and wrote about the self-destruction of the Mamluk regime in the eighteenth century, the shock of French occupation (1798–1801), and the changes implemented by Muhammad Ali. Viewed Napoleon's invasion as a reversal of natural order and as a clash between Christianity and Islam. Wrote within the chronicle/biographical dictionary framework used by classical historians.
