Quick Reference

A four-masted sailing ship square rigged on the two foremost masts and with a fore-and-aft rig on the two after masts. A number of these jackass-barques were used in the late 19th- and early 20th-century nitrate trade around Cape Horn to Chilean ports, many owners and skippers considering them to be more efficient in the particularly stormy weather so frequently experienced around the Horn.
