Home of the international Jacob's Pillow Dance festival in Becket, Massachusetts. It was started by Ted Shawn who bought an 18th-century farm named Jacob's Pillow in 1930 and turned it into a summer theatre. Originally the residence of his Men Dancers company, it soon offered summer dance courses and rehearsal facilities. In 1933 it held its first public performance; in 1941 a festival was established there, the first dance festival in the USA. Shawn continued to direct the festival until his death in 1972. Its theatre is named after him. Among the works created there is Tudor's Pillar of Fire (1941). The name Jacob's Pillow refers to a large pillow-shaped boulder on the property.
