The jackfruit is the roughly spherical, edible fruit of a tropical Asian tree, similar to but larger than the breadfruit. The jack- element of its name, which goes back to the seventeenth century, is a folk-etymological alteration of Portuguese jaca, which itself came from Malayalam chakka.
