Overview

Jacob's well

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

The scene of the conversation described in John 4 of Jesus with a woman of Samaria. He promises her ‘living water’ instead of the dull, still water she is to draw from the well. The well was probably near Shechem and may have been in fact no more than a tank for rain-water. Theologically, however, John is using the symbolism of a gushing, lively spring; this is an evocative image to express the joy and excitement of the new life which Jesus offers, beginning in baptism.
