Second great Mughal emperor. Continued his father Akbar's cultural and religious policies, yet the empire's overextended foundations began to weaken due to rising administrative and military expenses. His favorite wife, Nur Jahan, exercised increasing control as he became more debilitated by alcohol and opium abuse. He is renowned as a patron of miniature painting.
