Born into a merchant family in the village of Virpur in Gujarat, Jalaram became well known in the locality for his acts of charity, particularly towards mendicants and sādhus. A devotee of Rāma, he was credited with intercessory and miraculous powers, and subsequently became an object of devotion himself, especially among Gujaratis. His birthplace is a popular pilgimage centre, and temples have been dedicated to him throughout India and beyond.
