Expanded its base of support after the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon. Currently led by Shaykh Fathi Yakan. Major Sunni Islamist force in Lebanese electoral politics of the early 1990s. Enjoys a broader base of support than more militant movements supporting Islamic revolution. Yakan was elected in Tripoli in 1992, breaking the monopoly of old families over local politics.
