Quick Reference

Islamic group in Trinidad. Led by Yasin Abu Bakr, a former police officer, advocating justice for the poor and reformation of Muslim religious life in Trinidad. It drew support from poor urban blacks rather than established Syrian and South Asian Muslims. A land dispute in the 1980s escalated, with government takeover of the land and dismissal of legal appeals. The group occupied the television station and parliament, proclaiming a program of reform in July 1990; eventually the group surrendered and its leaders were jailed. The group remained active and was operating security and other companies when its members received amnesty in 1995–96.
