Company founded in 1962 at the time of Jamaica's independence from Great Britain. In 1967 Rex Nettleford, one of the company's founders, was appointed artistic director and principal choreographer. The company's style blends traditional Caribbean dance drama and ritual with contemporary modern dance and ballet. Works deal with social issues, religious themes, and folklore while abstract dance is also represented in the repertoire. The company tours internationally, and has a very active educational programme.
