Also known as JNI and the Society for the Victory of Islam. An organization established in Nigeria in 1962 to provide a vehicle for transcending divisions among Muslims in Nigeria. The sardauna of Sokoto, Ahmadu Bello, supported its creation on the advice of Abubakar Gumi, an influential Islamic renewal advocate. It has survived the turmoil of Nigerian politics, acting as a bridge between the influential Sufi orders in northern Nigeria and the activist anti-Sufi movement led by Gumi. In a time of tensions within the Muslim community in 1988–90, the mediation of the JNI made possible a formal reconciliation of the major Muslim groups.
