The king of Videha, he first appears in the Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad (3.1.1) in a debate with Yājñavalkya. He is subsequently cited as an exemplar by Kṛṣṇa in the Bhagavadgītā (3.20), and appears elsewhere in the Mahābhārata. In the Rāmāyaṇa, he plays an important role as the father of Sītā, whom he brought to existence from a ritually ploughed furrow. His capital city is Mithilā.
