A Hindu nationalist party founded in 1951 by S. P. Mookerjee in an attempt to provide an anti-Muslim alternative to the Congress Party, especially in the north of India. In 1977 it merged with other Hindu parties to form the Janatā Party, which briefly took power after the defeat of Indira Gandhi (1917–1984) in the post-‘emergency’ election.
