Flemish Roman Catholic theologian and founder of Jansenism. A strong opponent of the Jesuits, he proposed a reform of Christianity through a return to St Augustine. To this end he produced his major work, Augustinus (1640), which was published by his followers after his death. The four‐volume study followed St Augustine's teachings and formed the basis of Jansenism.
