A 15-m radio telescope opened in 1987 at an altitude of 4092 m at the Mauna Kea Observatories, Hawaii, owned by the UK, Canada, and the Netherlands, and operated by the Joint Astronomy Centre in Hawaii. It is designed to work at millimetre and submillimetre wavelengths (2 mm to 0.3 mm). It is named after J. C. Maxwell.
