John Jardine was born in Lochmaben, Dumfriesshire, and died in Edinburgh. A senior Scottish clergyman, he took his Doctorate of Divinity from St Andrews in 1758 and became dean of the Chapel Royal in 1761. A friend of Hume, he was one of the founders of the first Edinburgh Review and contributed some articles to it in its early years.
