His Manual of Archival Description (1922; 2e, 1937), the first such manual based on English experience, became an authoritative guide to the subject. Jenkinson wrote and lectured in London and Cambridge on palaeography and established Britain's first archives course at University College London (1947). He initiated the British Records Association (1932), encouraged the formation of county record offices, and promoted the National Register of Archives.
