Refers to the claim that post-industrial societies are moving to a ‘jobless’ state, in which the open-ended, long-term career with a single employer will largely disappear. In its place, it is argued, workers will develop mobile or portfolio careers, based on self-employment and short assignments with a large number of clients/employers. Despite predictions of the ‘end of work’ and the ‘death of the job’, empirical studies of job stability in both the UK and the USA indicate that there is little evidence of a collapse of long-term employment across the economy.
