founder of the Vallumbrosan Order. He entered a Benedictine monastery near Florence, but, disturbed by a simoniacal election, withdrew c.1036 and eventually settled at Vallombrosa. Here he collected a body of monks who followed a strict observance of the Benedictine Rule under the conditions of a semi-hermit life. He made provision for conversi whose labours freed the monks from manual work. Feast day, 12 July.
