John IV, Patriarch of Constantinople from 582. In 588 he assumed the challenging title of ‘Oecumenical Patriarch’; despite protests from Popes Pelagius II and Gregory I, John bequeathed the title to his successors. The ‘Penitential’ or manual for confessors attributed to him is not earlier than the 9th cent. Feast day in the E., 2 Sept.
