Quick Reference

Icelandic saga, written down c.ad 1200, which tells of the foundation of a fortified camp on the southern coast of the Baltic by a Dane from Funen. In the camp, Jómsborg, lives a military elite under strict discipline. The saga owes much to a 12th‐century nascent chivalry, but perhaps enshrines the memory of garrison camps like those of Svein Forkbeard in Denmark.
