Quick Reference

(1879–1958), Welsh psychoanalyst and biographer. His Oedipus-Complex as an Explanation of Hamlet's Mystery (1910) and Hamlet and Oedipus (1949) argue that a guilty Hamlet is reluctant to kill Claudius because of his fulfilment of Hamlet's own unconscious incestuous desires—a Freudian theory which remains pervasive and persistent.
