A fracture of the fifth metatarsal within 1.5 cm distal of the tuberosity where the peroneus brevis muscle is inserted in the foot. It is usually caused by forceful landing of the forefoot when the load is concentrated over the fifth metatarsal. It is common among basketball players and other athletes who frequently perform lateral movements and sudden forceful jumping that imposes high impact forces on the fifth metatarsal. A Jones fracture is often disabling and may require surgical fixation.
