Michael Joseph (1897–1958) founded his eponymous British publishing company in 1935 as a subsidiary of Victor Gollancz. The company published authors—including H. E. Bates and Joyce Cary—in hardback. It was taken over by Illustrated Newspapers in 1954 and joined the Penguin stable in 1985.
