American missionary to Burma. He came to England to confer with the LMS and was ordained a Congregational minister in 1812. On reaching Serampore he became a Baptist. He was refused permission to continue working in the territories of the East India Company and in 1813 he went to Rangoon, where he began to translate the Bible into Burmese. He met with success working among the Karens.
