junk DNA

A term sometimes used to refer to the majority of the DNA in most eukaryotic genomes which does not seem to have a coding or regulatory function. Like “junk,” it is of questionable value, but is not thrown out. See Alu family, selfish DNA, skeletal DNA hypothesis.
