Famous Iranian Ashari theologian and political philosopher. Teacher of Abu Hamid al-Ghazali (d. 1111). Taught that the sultan or amir was more necessary than the caliph. Proclaimed the amir or sultan responsible for carrying out jihad, appointing officials and judges, and maintaining a standing army. Allowed the appointment of a vizier to administer the state bureaucracy and raise revenues for the army.
