A category of Vedāṅga texts, also known as the Jyotiṣavedāṅga, partially dating from the 5th century bce and preserved in two recensions (those of the Ṛg and Yajur Vedas), which deals with the movement of heavenly bodies (jyotiṣa), and the divisions of time dependent on them, in order to fix a calendar of auspicious dates and times for the performance of Vedic sacrifices. The term is also more generally applied to texts which follow in and expand upon this Jyotiṣavedāṅga tradition.
