A Sanskrit literary genre providing the sensual equivalent to Artha- and Dharmaśāstra, insofar as it gives instruction and guidance for the urban sophisticate in cultural and, specifically, sexual pleasures. The earliest extant, and best-known text of this kind is the Kāma Sūtra. This provided the model for later works, such as Kokkaka's Kokaśāstra (Ratirahasya, c.12th century) and Kalyāṇamalla's Anaṅgaraṅga (15th century).
