Quick Reference

Name of the Buddha's horse, said to have been pure white in colour and born on the same day as the Buddha. Kanthaka features prominently in the story of the Great Renunciation where Prince Siddhārtha renounces the world and leaves his father's palace. The horse carries him 30 leagues away from the city, with Channa the charioteer holding onto its tail. When the Buddha crosses the river Anomā, the horse remains on the other side where it dies of grief but is reborn in heaven.
