South India's most sacred river. Rising in Karnataka, and flowing through Tamil Nadu to the Bay of Bengal, its symbolic resonance for Tamil culture is similar to the Gaṅgā's for northern India. A place of pilgrimage in itself, a number of famous tīrthas are situated on the Kāverī's course, chief among them the Śrīraṅgam island temple complex at Tiruchirāppaḷḷi.
