Recognized by the Twelver Shiis as the seventh imam, following his father, Jafar al-Sadiq. He was the object of apocalyptic expectations, with some of his followers claiming that he could not have died without fulfilling those expectations. Others among his followers came to acknowledge his son, Ali al-Rida, as the imam after him.
