English baritone. Zoology degree at Cambridge, then studied with John Cameron at RNCM. Tauber Prize 1986. Prof. début Hamburg 1987. Member of Scottish Opera 1988–93. CG début 1989 (Silvio in Pagliacci); ENO 1990 (Guglielmo in Così fan tutte); American début 1993 (San Francisco, Olivier in Capriccio); La Scala 1995 (Papageno in Zauberflöte); NY Met 1996 (Belcore in L'elisir d'amore). Created Prospero in Adès's The Tempest (CG 2004) and Winston Smith in Maazel's 1984 (CG 2005). Excellent as Billy Budd, Don Giovanni, Papageno, Pelléas. Also outstanding recitalist, especially in Schubert's Winterreise. CBE 2003.
