(1879–1944) A Scottish Indologist and constitutional theorist. After an early career in Colonial administration, he was appointed Regius Professor of Language at Edinburgh in 1914. He published copiously on many subjects. Among his most significant Indological publications are A History of Sanskrit Literature (1920), and The Religion and Philosophy of the Veda and Upanishads (1925).
