Swiss archaeologist and prehistorian who was ordained as a priest but subsequently became Director of the Zurich Museum and pioneered the investigation of the Swiss ‘lake‐dwellings’. With other researchers, he recognized that these settlements were not of one period but showed a progression from Stone Age to Iron Age, providing further corroboration of the Three Age System.
