son of a strolling actor‐manager, Roger Kemble (1721–1802), brother of Sarah Siddons and J. P. Kemble; father of Fanny Kemble and J. M. Kemble. A leading actor for some 25 years, his range was considerable in comedy and romance, but he did not often attempt tragedy.
