English statistician specializing in experimental design whose career was largely in the USA. Kempthorne obtained his BA from Cambridge U in 1940, with an MSc in 1943. In 1941 he joined Ronald Fisher and Yates at Rothamsted. In 1947 he joined the fledgling Statistics Department at ISU, remaining there for the rest of his career. He was the COPSS Fisher Lecturer in 1965, the President of the IMS in 1985, and was awarded Honorary Fellowship of the RSS in 1988.
