became professor of poetry at Oxford in 1920, having previously held other important university posts. He is celebrated for the width of his humane criticism in English, Norse, and Scottish literature. His Collected Essays were edited by C. Whibley and published in 1925. His other most admired works are Epic and Romance (1897) and The Dark Ages (1904).
