A treatment approach to the management of chronic periodontitis described by P. Keyes in 1978. It was also known as the ‘salt out’ technique and involved the conventional therapy of periodontitis-affected tissues (oral hygiene instruction and root planing) followed by the placement of a paste of sodium bicarbonate into the diseased pocket. The pocket flora was monitored using phase contrast microscopy.
