Place of seclusion or retreat. Sometimes refers to individual spiritual retreats, generally within a Sufi hospice, taken under the leadership of a spiritual director, but can also refer to the physical space of an individual cell intended for meditation, typically around the mosque square. Sometimes used to refer to specific rituals of individual meditation. The Khalwati order derived its name from this term due to the order's special emphasis on the need for retreat and individual asceticism. The Sanusi order also emphasizes the need to withdraw from the world periodically.
