Title traditionally designating tribal nomadic leaders in an area from Central Asia to northern India, Iran, Anatolia/Turkey, and southern Russia, but which became widespread following Genghis Khan's thirteenth-century conquests. Not widely used in the Arabic-speaking world. The term has generally fallen into disuse except as a surname in Pakistan and in the title for the Ismaili spiritual leader, the Aga Khan.
